What is S.E.E.R.?
S.E.E.R. is Season Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is to AC systems what gas mileage is to your car.
What is a TON of air conditioning?
Tonnage is a unit of measure used to determine how much cooling your home needs to keep you comfortable.
One ton is equal to 12,000 btu (British thermal units). If you placed a 1 ton block of ice in a 500 square foot room with a 8 foot high ceiling it would take approximately 24 hours for that ice to melt. The reason it is melting is because it is absorbing the heat in the heat in the room. The same theory applies to Air Conditioning, an air conditioner cools down a room by absorbing the heat and 1 ton of AC will cool approximately 500 square feet of living space.
Effective January 01, 2020, R-22 Refrigerant commonly known as FREON is being phased out and will no longer be available in the US.
This is all part of the Montreal Protocol of 1987, where the EPA determined certain gasses were harming the ozone, and R-22 was listed as a major contributor to this problem. As a result FREON as you know it is no longer available as of 1/1/2020. (New systems use R410A refrigerant)
There are substitutes for R-22, in FREON systems, such as R407 and MO-99, but the key word is substitute. The conversion is expensive and even when you are through that you will still have an old system that isn’t going to last, will still need repairs in the future, and won’t reduce your electricity bill; but A new 16 S.E.E.R. Carrier system will save you money!
